Whiplash

Whiplash is a common name for neck sprains. It is called whiplash due to the motion that occurs, which is the action of your neck and back being thrown forwards/backwards at high speeds. This can cause the muscles and ligaments in your neck to tear.

Whiplash is commonly associated with road traffic accidents, especially when a car is hit from behind. The symptoms of whiplash never usually appear straight away, they normally develop a few days after the accident has taken place.

The symptoms that you are likely to experience if you are suffering from whiplash are:

  • Neck stiffness
  • Injuries to muscles/ligaments
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Difficulty swallowing, which indicates injury to your oesophagus
  • Abnormal sensations such as burning etc
  • Shoulder pain
  • Back pain

Not everyone experiences the same problems when it comes to whiplash but if you suspect that you are suffering from it you should visit your doctor immediately. To identify whiplash x-rays will be taken of your cervical spine to spot delayed symptoms and to rule out the possibility of spinal cord injury.

The affects of whiplash usually subside after two or four weeks, however in severe cases you may end up suffering as a result of whiplash for numerous months after the accident has taken place.

Treatment for whiplash involves wearing a collar for two or three weeks as well as heat therapy in order to relieve muscle tension/pain. Pain medication may also be administered to reduce inflammation and to ensure the movement of your muscles you will be given a range of exercises to perform to reduce stiffness and to build strength back up in your muscles.

If you have suffered whiplash in the last three years that has occurred as the direct result of an accident that wasn’t your fault then you could be entitled to put in a claim for compensation.
