Claiming Compensation for Depression

Many people still seem to be under the notion that depression is not a serious illness when in fact depression is not just a ‘state of mind’ it is not something you can not just snap out of.

Depression is caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals that can occur due to a serious accident or traumatic event and like any other serious medical condition it needs to be treated.

It has been said that around 15% of people will experience a stage of depression at some point within their lifetime. There are many factors that can cause this; it could be family linked or due to the loss of a loved one but what we are starting to see here at Accident Consultant is that many cases of depression are actually being brought on as a reaction of being involved in an accident such as a road traffic accident.

There are three stages of depression, mild, moderate or severe. Depending on the depth of your depression will depend on the sort of symptoms that you will experience and the form of treatment that you will receive. The symptoms of depression can be split into three categories; psychological, physical and social. The most common of these are as follows:

Psychological:

  • Continuous low mood, or sadness and lack of enjoyment
  • Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness and low self-esteem
  • Feeling irritable and intolerant towards others
  • Lack of motivation, and little interest in things in general
  • Suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of harming someone else
  • Feeling anxious or worried

Physical

  • Change in appetite and weight
  • Digestive complaints, such as indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea
  • Unexplained aches and pains
  • Lack of energy and a lack of interest in sex

In the social sense a victim of depression will often have a reduced interest in hobbies and social activities. They will often avoid seeing friends and often end up not working as well as they should.
